    “Imitating Our Founding Father”

                          Tribute to Rev. Herschel Rogers

In his first letter to the church in Corinth, the apostle Paul reminded them, “Even though you have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers…I became your father through the gospel.” [I Cor 4:15] He was referring to his having planted the church years before and his teaching them the way to live in Christ. He even goes on in verse 16 to say: “Therefore I urge you to imitate me.

Rev. Herschel Rogers was the founding Pastor of WGBC back in 1955 and laid a great foundation for its future. As you can see in the bio below, he had a life-long commitment to ‘missions’ —to the work of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. He always encouraged a strong emphasis on missions. We need to continue to imitate him in that regard!

In fact, this year’s budget included an additional $1,200 to be designated for international or national mission work.  The Church Council decides monthly where this money should go. That addition was the result of John Zimmer Sr. reminding us of Rev. Rogers’s commitment to mission giving. His influence lives on, as it should.

Haiti has been the target of that giving much of this year.  In fact, our son, Keith Tilford, was supported in his August mission trip to Haiti to help build homes for displaced persons/families.

He was born in Dallas, WI on Jan. 13, 1919 the son of Lambert W. and Bessie M. (Taylor) Rogers. He graduated from Barron, WI High School in 1937 and received an A.A. from Bethel College in 1941. Rev. Rogers received a B.A. degree from the University of Dubuque, IA in 1944. He served in the US Navy from 1944-1946 and in 1947 received a B.D. from Yale Divinity School. In 1961 he received a Th.M. from Eastern Baptist Seminary. He was called to be the pastor at Mt. Ida Baptist Church in Fennimore, WI and then the Hebron Baptist Church, Seekonk, MA. He served as the pastor at The First Baptist Church in Rockland, MA and then started a new church in Willow Grove, PA. He then went to Park Memorial Baptist Church in Springfield, MA. Rev. Rogers was the Area Director for World Mission Campaign of American Baptist Churches covering CT and RI. He then moved to OH for the World Mission Campaign. He was the Regional Director for Collections for the Northeast and Puerto Rico living in Springfield, MA. Rev. Rogers served the Bethany Baptist Church in Presque Isle, ME and then was the Director for the Fund of Renewal for the American Baptists and moved to Suncook, NH covering VT and NH. He moved back to OH for the Campaign Fund of Renewal which helps minorities. He served the American Baptist Homes of the Midwest and then did follow up work for the Northeast. Rev. Rogers was the National Director for Planned Giving for American Baptist Home Mission Society living in Willow Grove, PA. He helped form the American Baptist Foundation which covers the USA. He moved to New London as the Area Representative for American Baptist Foundation and then became the Associate Pastor at The First Baptist Church of New London, NH. He was pastor at The First Free Will Baptist Church of Sutton from 1994-2003 where he was also a member. Rev. Rogers served on the National Board of American Baptist Churches in Presque Isle, ME, served on State Committees and Boards in MA and ME and was a member of the American Baptist Ministers Conference. His wife of 63 years, Helen (Johnson) Rogers, died in 2008. He is survived by three daughters and husbands, Holly and Howard McCain of Dinuba, CA, Heather and Dick Warde of South Portland, ME and Heidi and Joe LaCroix of Concord, NH; four grandchildren, Eric, Sarah, Jennifer and Kimberly; and two great grandchildren, Meaghan and Rylan.
