Why Do I Need A Church Home?

Everyone would expect Pastors to say that everyone needs to have a church home and to attend regularly and get connected, right? Just as you would expect every restaurant owner to say that people should eat out more. But what if an atheist said that it was good to be a part of a church family? That would be different! Well, some years back, well-known author, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. told a group of people at a writers conference that he had received a letter from a 35 year old man who was a fan of the author and wanted some advice from him. The man was about to be released from prison after being in for a long time and did not know how to ‘get back’ into society.

Before telling the audience his answer, Vonnegut informed everyone that he had taken over the Presidency of the atheistic ‘American Humanist Society’ after science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov had died. Then he said this: “I wrote and told the young man to find a good church. I told him that because a good church is an extended family, and everyone needs a good extended family.” There you go, an atheist telling someone to go to church! Whatever reason Vonnegut had for denying God’s existence, he couldn’t deny the worth of being part of something that could fill a great need we all have—to be connected to a good extended family.

Willow Grove Baptist Church is a small church, as most American churches are. But a small church can sometimes give what larger churches have a harder time giving; a sense of community and being part of an extended family. A small town in up-state Vermont put these words on its sign entering the town: “A Small Town is Like a Large Family.”  That is true for a small church, also.                        

With this in mind, we invite you to come out and visit our small church and meet our extended family.  We believe that God is in our presence, guiding us to serve Him and others with love and faithfulness; guiding us to be a family of believers who journey together through this very troubled world. Jesus gave His great invitation—“Come to me, all of you are who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest… rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28, 29) We have accepted that invitation ourselves and invite you to come and be a part of our large, extended family as we walk with Jesus along the path of life and tell others about the Savior’s love and forgiveness.
